Oh Come On, You're Not Even Trying Now
Sure, I don't expect all book designers to be as innovative as Chip Kidd, but if you're going to design a book jacket with a startling resemblance to another title, do at least try to make sure it's not a bestseller, eh ?
It's so refreshing to see that someone else has spotted this inane, uninventive, insulting, pathetic attempts to wheedle money from us for a sub-standard book. I had a discussion about this with some guys at the London Book Fair last week when I spotted yet another Dan Brown cover clone. All she put up as defence was 'we have no control over what our art department does'. Arse. When my book cover was being designed, Pan Macmillan made a deliberate attempt not to emulate the various other similar books out there (such as the QI books) as, in their words, 'That would be a bit desperate'. So, no excuses boys and girls. Show some freaking imagination! I was going to write a blog post about this very subject - now I'll simply direct them here. Good work, John!
